The Blue Moon Men's Night Doubles
    Kailua Racquet Club, Kailua (Oahu)
    July - August, 2013

    Main Draw: Semi Finals
#4 Minh Le & Wei-Yu Su (wearing gray & white)
#2 Mikael Maatta & Jan Tribler (wearing white)

Throughout the Kailua Men's Night Doubles over the decades, there have been many great rivalries in tournament history. One of them being Minh Le & Wei-Yu vs. Mikael Maatta & Jan Tribler. These duos have faced each other multiple times in the previous 2 decades with the head to head virtually split today. Each time these two teams matched up in the draw, you knew you were in for a championship level fight, whether it was the finals or the first round.

In 2013, then 2-time & reigning Kailua Men's Night Doubles champions Mikael Maatta & Jan Tribler were doing nothing but continuing their successful partnership as they dominated the Triple crown of tennis once again that summer. Coming into Kailua, this team had momentum that only the top teams in the state could possibly rival. However, once again though, they would run into their long time rival team Minh Le & Wei-Yu Su. Minh & Wei-Yu were trying to come back from a tough loss in the championship round of the Blue Moon event in 2012. Coming into the 2013 edition of the tournament, these guys had one goal in mind: exact revenge over their rivals & reign as Kailua champions once again!

At the time of this match, Minh Le & Wei-Yu lead the head to head between these teams 3-1 but it felt like the tide was starting to turn for Mikael & Jan. Despite this being only a Semi Final, this match had the quality & atmosphere of a final! Would the lefty duo dish out some pay back & go on to try for their 4th Kailua crown or would the former HPU Sharks keep the good times rolling & try for their 3rd consecutive Kailua title?

Check out highlights from this memorable Semi Final showdown!

    Qualifying Draw: 2nd Round
Andrew Murakami & Benny Neumann (wearing black)
Jared Carstenn & Beau Smith (wearing blue & purple)

One thing Tennis Ninja will start covering more in future videos is action from the infamous qualifying draw of the annual Kailua Men's Night Doubles. This 1st week of the event, as previous interview guest & KRC Director of Tennis Jared Carstenn noted, is "One of the most difficult testing grounds" a local tennis player will face in Hawaii. Top finishers of this bracket will advance to play one of the seeded teams in the main draw the following week of the event, meaning that only the strongest local players survive. Some of the most dramatic & crazy matches in tournament history have happened at this stage of the tournament, making for maybe the most anticipated & exciting qualifying draws you will see anywhere in a local tennis event!

In 2013, Jared & his then partner, former collegiate player Beau Smith, found themselves with a first round bye in qualifying. This meant that they only needed to pull out two matches to advance to the big show the following week. In previous Night Doubles, Jared & Beau looked to be one of the favorites to advance out of the qualifying rounds & into the main draw. However, as noted in past years, making it out of the qualifying draw is no guarantee for any team. Their opponents, former University of Redlands player Andrew Murakami & managing partner of Cross Court Hawaii (formerly the biggest tennis pro shop on Oahu) Benny Neumann, would rise up to meet the challenge! Andrew & Benny recorded an earlier victory to make it to the 2nd round, meaning they were warm in matchplay. Jared & Beau went into the event fresh but cold competitively.

This match would go down as one of the more dramatic & memorable matches of the qualifying draw that year!

Check out highlights from this fun contest between these gritty local Hawaii teams!

    Men's Open Doubles Finals:
#1 Ikaika Jobe & Dennis Lajola (wearing black)
#2 Mikael Maatta & Jan Tribler (wearing black & white)

For years, the Kailua Men's Night Doubles championship match has been one of the top highlights of the Hawaii tennis season. As a player, spectator, or event staff, this was the event you wanted to be at. Not just for the tennis but for the atmosphere that is essentially Hawaii's grand slam tennis tournament. 2014 was no exception as we a repeat of the very memorable 2009 final between two familiar teams was talked about throughout the event. And sure enough, it happened!

In 2014, then 2-time (as a doubles team) Kailua Night Doubles champions Dennis Lajola & Ikaika Jobe were tearing up the Hawaii Triple Crown of Men's Tennis. Every match they played, they would win with ease. Up to this point that summer, this team didn't drop a single set. Clearly, Dennis & Ikaika with their vast experience in NCAA & even the ATP were THE force in Hawaii open level tennis. Standing in their way of a 3rd Kailua Night Doubles team title were Night Doubles veterans Mikael Maatta & Jan Tribler. This team, other than Dennis & Ikaika, also continued to have their way with their opponents throughout the triple crown. This team was crafty, scrappy, & highly experienced in the big moments of a doubles tournament. Also being 2-time champions of the event, Jan & Mikae were winding up to give it their best shot at, what seemingly looked like, the monumental task of taking down the juggxrnaught team that was Ikaika & Dennis.

Like, Mentioned before, these two teams battled it out for the 2009 Kailua Night Doubles championship with Dennis & Ikaika edging things out in a 3rd set tiebreak! Would we get the same thing in 2014?

Check out highlights from this fun Kailua Night Doubles championship match!
