The Blue Moon Kailua Men's Night Doubles
    Kailua Racquet Club, Kailua, HI
    July-August, 2011

    Men's Open Doubles Final:
    (1) Mikael Maatta & Jan Tribler (wearing white)
    (2) Ikaika Jobe & Thomas Shubert (wearing black)

From 2000 - 2010, the Blue Moon Men's Night Doubles was saw some high level tennis, particularly in the final rounds of the event. The likes of Minh Le & Wei You Su, Michael Bruggemann & Eric Chen, Dennis Lajola & Ikaika, & a few others were in firm ownership of the Kailua Crown throughout the decade. Some teams were hot on their heals but always fell short in the last match or two. However, in 2011, one of those teams would appear tired of being the bridesmaid!

In 2011, Mikael Maatta & Jan Tribler came into the Kailua Night Doubles with one mission: Win it all! The former Sharks came up short of the title multiple times, mostly to their rival team Minh Le & Wei-Yu Su. They also were one set away in 2009 but were outlasted by a red hot Dennis Lajola & Ikaika Jobe. However, 2011, these boys came into the event as the clear favorite to win the championship this time around, which would potentially be there first ever Blue Moon Men's Night Doubles title.
Their opponents that stood in their way was Ikaika Jobe & Thomas Shubert, two eventual Punahou School tennis coaches. Ikaika at this point had won the Kailua tournament the previous two years with former partner Dennis Lajola. In 2011, Dennis spent his summer on the pro tour so Ikaika needed a partner. He called on good friend & BYU college tennis stud Thomas Shubert to help him try to attain the 3-peat. At that point, Thomas had never been this deep in the Kailua draw, let alone compete in this event too often in the past. However, he was not phased by the pressure as him & Ikaika had their way with the rest of the main draw competition.

Would this be the night for youth to once again reign supreme or would this be the night for Maatta & Tribler to finally walk on the stage as the Kailua Night Doubles champions?

Check out highlights from this fun & contrasting contest from the 2011 Kailua Men's Night Doubles.

The Oahu Club Men's & Mixed Night Doubles Championships
    The Oahu Club, Hawaii Kai
    June, 2017

    Men's Open Doubles Finals:
    (7) Andre Ilagan & Thomas Shubert (wearing white & gray)
    (4) Hendrik Bode & Yann Renault (wearing black & orange)

2017 was a banner year for the Hawaii Men's Triple Crown of Tennis as the Night Doubles scene saw a high level of tennis played back to back to back event that summer. Everybody turned out to play in what would be one of the most competitive years in recent history. Like always, the Triple Crown would kick off with the annual Oahu Club Men's Night Doubles, which also added a mixed doubles division for the first time in event history in 2017 as well.

That summer, a familiar name burst onto the Night Doubles scene that we would probably see for many years to come. His name was Andre Ilagan, partnering up with one of Punahou School's top coaches & former ATP touring pro Thomas Shubert. At that time, Andre had just come off winning the HHSAA Varsity Tennis State Championships as a junior for W.R. Farrington High School. He had never been this far in a Night Doubles event before but Andre was looking forward to possibly mark the beginning of his era in the Triple Crown. His partner, Thomas Shubert, was also no slouch. Thomas was serving as one of the high school varsity tennis coaches for Punahou & was looking to get back into the tournament scene again in Hawaii. He had also formerly played on the pro tour where he had the pleasure of trading strikes with the likes of Pete Sampras, Serena & Venus Williams, Sam Querry, & many others along the way. As the 7th seeded team, Andre & Thomas worked their way through the Oahu Club draw & eventually found themselves in the championship round.

Their opponent's were considered veterans of the Night Doubles circuit at that point. Hendrik Bode & Yann Renault represented the Fin of Hawaii Pacific University, both serving on the Men's Tennis Team coaching staff (Hendrik heading & Yann assisting). Hendrik had already won an Oahu Club Night Doubles crown back in 2012 & he was looking to add another one to his trophy mantle. His partner Yann, was also a veteran of the big moments in tournaments. The former HPU Shark may have not won a Night Doubles crown at that point but he was a member of HPU's Division 2 College Tennis National Championship team back in 2016, making him a clutch player to play alongside during the finals of any tennis event.

This meeting would consist of two, in a way, surprise teams to contest in the finals as higher seeds like the likes of former Oahu Club Night Doubles champs Ikaika Jobe & Jeff Fitch were knocked out little than anticipated. This would make for a wide open Final match with both teams realizing their early chance to grab a Night Doubles crown for 2017!

Check out highlights from the men's doubles championship match of the 2017 Oahu Club Men's & Mixed Night Doubles!
